7. Time to first paycheck — CNA 3 months, LPN 15 months, RN 26+ months

Time to first nursing paycheck is a separate calculation from program length because most students also work during school. A CNA can typically be certified, licensed by their state's Nurse Aide Registry, and earning within 90 days of enrollment, especially in long-term-care settings actively recruiting.
LPNs reach that first licensed paycheck around month 15 on average, factoring NCLEX-PN scheduling wait times. Delays in board processing and exam seats add 4 to 8 weeks in some states. Working as a CNA during LPN school is common and adds $15,000 to $20,000 of income during the training window.
For RNs, the ADN path lands the first RN paycheck near month 26, including NCLEX-RN preparation. BSN candidates typically clock in around month 30 unless enrolled in accelerated programs. Every state board publishes NCLEX processing times — NCSBN aggregates these quarterly for comparison shopping.
