3. LPN-to-RN bridge programs — 12 to 18 months, widely available

LPN-to-RN bridge programs are one of the most useful, underused features of the US nursing pipeline. Most community colleges and many state universities offer 12- to 18-month LPN-to-ADN or LPN-to-BSN options that credit prior LPN coursework and clinical hours toward the RN curriculum.
Employers often subsidize bridge tuition heavily. Hospital systems including HCA, Ascension, and many regional networks offer $5,000 to $15,000 in tuition assistance per year for LPNs stepping up to RN, sometimes tied to a two- or three-year work commitment after licensure.
The strategic implication is real: entering nursing as an LPN, earning wages while completing an ADN or BSN bridge, and finishing as an RN can be lower total cost and lower opportunity cost than going straight into a four-year BSN. AACN publishes state-by-state bridge program directories for candidates evaluating this route.
