6. Medical Assistant — $38K – $48K

Medical Assistant is a mixed bag on the short-cert list. Some programs run 12 to 16 weeks, others require nine months to a full year for a full diploma. The shorter programs tend to focus on either clinical or administrative tracks, while longer programs cover both and unlock higher-pay physician office and specialty clinic hiring.
The American Association of Medical Assistants offers the Certified Medical Assistant credential (CMA), and the National Healthcareer Association offers the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). Physician offices, urgent care chains, and outpatient specialty clinics are the primary employers for both credentials.
BLS OES puts the medical assistant median near $42K, with a range of $38K to $48K depending on setting, credential, and shift. Specialty clinic MAs — cardiology, dermatology, orthopedics — tend to earn at the top of the range, and multi-clinic groups often add small bonuses tied to visit volume.
