3. Night to day transition tactics — how transfers actually work
Most nurses who start on nights plan to move to days eventually. The internal transfer window at major hospital systems typically opens after 12 months of full-time employment in the original position, though some systems require 18 months. Union facilities have contractually defined internal-posting rules that favor seniority.
The most effective transition pattern: build strong relationships with the day-shift charge nurse and unit manager during overlap hours (7 AM handoff especially), volunteer for day-shift coverage during PTO gaps, and document consistent performance evaluations. Many day-shift openings are filled internally before ever being posted externally.
Some nurses skip the transfer and take a lateral move to a different hospital or specialty on day shift. That path is often faster than waiting for an internal day slot, though it forfeits accrued PTO and pension vesting in some systems. Weigh sign-on bonuses at competing hospitals against internal seniority when calculating.
