7. McAllen — $75K median

McAllen and the broader Rio Grande Valley have been on an accelerated growth curve for RN pay since 2022. BLS OES puts the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metro RN median near $75K, and DHR Health, South Texas Health System, and Doctors Hospital at Renaissance are the main hospital employers driving demand.
The Valley has a fast-growing population and a smaller local RN pipeline than the demand curve requires, which creates persistent vacancies at every level from med-surg to ICU. Bilingual English-Spanish nurses are effectively required at most bedside roles, and hospital pay grids reflect that with differentials.
Base pay growth from 2023 to 2026 has run around 9 to 11 percent per Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies data — one of the fastest in the state. Sign-on bonuses of $12K to $20K are common at DHR Health and South Texas Health System, especially for critical care, ED, and OR roles.
